Focal length can be called as one of the main characteristics of the
lens as the lens is recognized by its focal length itself.
The Focal Length is mentioned on the mount of the lens. It is the
distance from the center of the lens to the film plane or the sensor
when the focus is set to infinity.
What is infinity?
Infinity is the symbol look like number 8 on the focus ring. You
need to set the lens on this symbol.
When you say 50mm lens, it means the focal length of the lens is 50
mm.
This again means the distance between the center of the lens and the
film plane or the sensor is 50 mm when the lens is set to infinity.
